New call for applications - the SJS is recruiting new editors

The Swiss Journal of Sociology (SJS) is seeking new colleagues to join its editorial team starting in september 2026. We invite all interested scholars to submit their applications by May 31st 2026.
SJS aims to be the leading platform for sociological publishing and debate in Switzerland. We are looking for prospective editors who are enthusiastic about contributing to this mission. In collaboration with the current editorial board, new editors will play a key role in shaping the future of SJS during a period of many new opportunities and challenges for academic publishing.

As part of the editorial team, you will be responsible for a range of publication-related tasks, including evaluating manuscripts and special issue proposals, communicating with authors, promoting the journal in academic forums and supporting outreach efforts.

SJS aims to have a balanced editorial board that reflects a variety of thematic areas, methodological approaches, gender, linguistic regions, academic stages, and institutional contexts. To be eligible, applicants must hold a PhD in sociology (or a closely related field), be affiliated with a Swiss university, and be familiar with the landscape of sociological research in Switzerland.

Given the current composition of the editorial board and the planned departures, we particularly welcome applications from female scholars based in German-speaking Switzerland.

If you are interested, please send a one-page letter of motivation and an up-to-date CV to
socio.journal@sgs-sss.ch.

We look forward to receiving your application!

Goodbye and Welcome

With the beginning of 2026, the Swiss Journal of Sociology is pleased to announce several changes in the composition of its editorial board.

The editorial board of the SJS would like to express our sincere gratitude to the outgoing editors, Kenneth Horvath (Zurich University of Teacher Education) and Roman Gibel (University of Zurich), who contributed enormously to the journal’s successful transformation over the last years. Through their dedicated work and commitment, they played a central role in strengthening the journal’s profile and supporting important developments in its editorial processes. We are deeply grateful for their valued contributions during this period. At the same time, we are pleased to welcome Matthias Leanza (University of Basel) and Mattia Vacchiano (University of Geneva) as new journal editors to our team. We very much look forward to working with them and to their contributions to the continued development of the journal.

New Editorial Advisory Board

Another important milestone has been the renewal and restructuring of the international advisory board, now renamed the Editorial Advisory Board, who met for the first time in January 2026. Following formal approval by the SSA Board, eleven new members were appointed (see full list here). The composition of the new board has been carefully considered to ensure a balance between expertise, seniority, regional representation, and gender.

The Editorial Advisory Board will support the journal editors through strategic guidance, promotion of the journal within the scholarly community, and by contributing to the peer-review process. Members are appointed for a period of three years, renewable once.
