Abstract

Metapictures are a key research tool in the computational analysis of large visual datasets. Based on algorithmic processes, they reveal patterns, anomalies, and other significant relationships within the data that might otherwise remain undiscovered. This article considers metapictures as results of a contingent, decision-dependent process, and investigates them from a critical perspective that combines visual sociology and digital image science.
